“What ya doing there, farm boy?”
“Just pumping some gas into my car, listening to the Phil Vischer Podcast while Phil introduces me and then plays my video. Quiet now…we’re coming to the part where I say something funny!”
Sound a little surreal? You betcha, but that’s what happened to me this week, and it was a stitch. The first 144 episodes of the Phil Vischer Podcast were plenty funny without me, but episode 145 will always hold a special place in my heart.
Here’s what happened. (Check it out, then come back and read on, keeping in mind that this was back when I was blogging under the name “JT Adamson.” My mistake. Now I need a remix for my real name!)
Those podcast folk are kind and generous, and I’m glad they enjoyed my little attempt at guerrilla marketing for them. (This is very different from gorilla marketing, which often turns violent). However, I’m afraid I need to set the record straight on a few things.
I am not a Canadian.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that! If I were a Canadian, people would probably think I’m more polite, more peaceful, and more interested in beer than I actually am. Alas, however, I’m all ‘Merican, with a strong affection for my Scottish heritage.
I am not a farmer (but I play one on TV, or at least on this week’s podcast).
I have many farmer characteristics. I shovel horse poop, which makes me smell like a farmer. I often wear a hat, which makes me look like a farmer. I say y’all sometimes, which makes me sound like a farmer. But the shoveling thing is a hobby, not a living, and has a lot to do with owning horses, and nothing to do with me making money. For a living….
It’s true, I can do more than shovel horse poop.
Phil is correct on this. Like Liam Neeson, “I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career.”
However, Liam’s skills involve wielding weapons and being able to punch bad guys or wolves or anything else to devastating effect. My skills, and my living, have to do with producing and editing videos. Years ago, when Big Idea was desperately seeking animators for their large load of work, we even got the “brother could you spare some animators” call. But we couldn’t spare ours. Sorry, Phil.
So, that explains me making a video. It also explains why I often express myself online without making a video, since, heck, I already do that all day!
A final organic utterance.
If the above title makes no sense to you, you’ll have to go and listen to the entire Episode 145 and find out what that’s about. In any case, it was a lot of fun being included in the show, and really appreciate it. I encourage you to check the podcast out. There aren’t many places that are both thought provoking and fun, but the Phil Vischer Podcast is one of them. Even when I’m not on the show.
